How T.I. Performance Helps Monash Motorsport Push Innovation
Monash Motorsport is proud to be supported by T.I. Performance, whose expertise and products help us push the limits of performance, reliability, and data precision. T.I. Performance is well known for their wide range of automotive sensors and performance parts. Their generous contribution to our design is in the form of linear potentiometers, a type of sensor which varies its output based on movement in one direction.
Monash Motorsport utilises these lightweight linear potentiometers to test, validate, tune and monitor data of the car by enabling us to record extensive on-track data of how different parts of our car change over time.
Linear Potentiometer Sensors
We integrate T.I. Performance’s linear potentiometers across M25 to measure three vital parameters for both driver performance and car dynamics:
Steering Angle: By tracking the rack’s linear travel, these sensors are able to provide the steering angle in real time. This is critical for both our driven and driverless modes, providing the data our vehicle controller and autonomous state estimation require.
Throttle Input: In any FSAE car, throttle position is the primary driver intent signal. The accuracy and reliability of these sensors allow for smooth torque requests and consistent slip ratio control, while dual sensors support safety and redundancy. The logged data also proves critical for driver training and strategy.
Shock Displacement: In our suspension, the linear potentiometers measure the position and velocity of our shocks compression, allowing us to understand the car’s
behaviour over differing track surfaces. They also aid in the tuning of the car’s balance and handling.Torque Vectoring: These sensor inputs are also utilised in our torque vectoring system, allowing us to devise desired driver handling, and distribute torque to each wheel.
As such, integrating the linear potentiometers into our vehicle enables the team to paint a live picture of the car’s behaviour.
T.I. Performance has a large range of products available, from ECUs and tuning chips, to engine parts and specialised electronics. As one of Australia's largest distributors for Haltech, T.I. Performance carry stock of their ECUs, displays and sensors, as well as performance brands such as Bosch and Raceworks. High quality sensors can give insight for improving and monitoring mechanical conditions, and can directly enhance vehicle performance and provide safety in the case where conditions are not ideal. These products are designed to not only be used in track-style racing scenarios, but for use in road-going vehicles. This comprehensive range of products is one of the many reasons why we appreciate our partnership with T.I. Performance, as they understand what it takes to bridge the gap between project and execution.
T.I Performance Tools
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be installing and testing T.I. Performance’s sensors onto M25. These integrations will give us more opportunities to showcase how T.I.'s potentiometers capture and deliver critical data, and how they are directly contributing to our car being competitive on the world stage. Once M25 is assembled, testing sessions will be undertaken in order to gather precise data from different setups, and different conditions, which the potentiometers allow us to accurately quantify. This data is integral to both validating the systems on the car, and tuning them to achieve their optimal performance at our upcoming Australasian competition in December. It also enables us to provide critical feedback to our drivers, allowing them to perfect their driving styles.
T.I. Performance’s Linear Potentiometers on M25
With the support of T.I. Performance, our team has been able to continuously collect relevant and accurate data, enabling us to push boundaries with M25 and work towards our goal of innovation. Monash Motorsport is grateful for our partnership with T.I. Performance, and we can’t wait to see what we can achieve together.
